Are You Using Allaah’s Favours to Disobey Him?

There is no single sin you’ll ever commit that doesn’t involve the use of at least one of the several favours of Allaah upon you.

Telling a lie requires using your tongue and your ability to think.

Fixing your gaze on things that are haram to look at requires using not just your eyes, but your ability to properly interpret what you see.

Listening to music requires using your ability to hear as well as correctly interpret whatever you hear.

Holding or touching what is haram to touch requires your ability to control your limbs, touch and feel things.

And going to places that a true Muslim shouldn’t be found at requires your ability to walk and decide your movement from place to place.

When you do those unlawful things using your smartphone, you’re leveraging your ability to afford a smartphone — another favour that Allaah grants only whom He wills!

And the list of sins is endless.

Also, don’t forget that you engage in most sins only when you have sound health and peace of mind — two huge favours that some people yearn for but don’t get to enjoy.

So, each time you feel the urge to commit a sin, answer these questions:

Which of Allaah’s favours on you would you have to involve in committing this sin?

  • Would committing this sin be the right way to utilize those favours of Allaah upon you? Does Allaah really deserve this in return for those favours He granted you?
  • Have you ever thought that Allaah could punish you for a sin by subsequently withdrawing whichever He wants of the favours you used in committing that sin?
  • And if He is kind enough not to adopt that approach, have you forgotten that you will surely give account of how you utilized His favours on you?

“Then, on that Day, you shall be questioned about the favours you enjoyed.” — Q102:8
